MINERS BREAK AGREEMENT.
A HOLIDAY ON MAY DAY.
WELLINTON, May 6.
The coal miners on the West Coast did not work1 on May ist. They announced that they wen? having a'holiday in celebration of May Day. This stoppage,is regarded by the employers as an aggravated breach o£ the agreement undejr which the minei nooiinaliy are being operated. It wilt be lemembered that recently the Coalmine Owners' Association drrvv the attention of the Miners' Federation to repeated '((reaches of the agreement. The los 3 of a day at all the mines at a time vhen the coal shortage is critical is a serious matter for the whola (community. The Miners' Federation has i.ot yet made any official repiy to the recent demand of the Coalmine Owners' Association that the agreement should be observed at the mines. The Federation acknowledged the receipt ri the Association's communication, an-1 f-tated that the matter would be considered. The agreement provides that there shall be no stoppages, nnd thnt all. disputes are1 to ha referred to the Disputes' Committee
