AUCKLAND,' May 6
Although the coal shortage is so acute at present, and there seems little likelihood of any adequate measure of relief, Auckland merchants interviewed seemed hopeful that the city "would worry through the winter somehow." This was as far as they would go. "There is no doubt whatever that the situation is serious," said one," and although we are picking up supplies wherever possible, they are greatly below the demand. The position is certainly worse than it was the same time last year."
