SOLDIERS AND THE LAND.

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT IS

DOING

{Per Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, May 6

• The Minister of Lands, referring to a statement published recently that the Government was extending scant consideration to soldiers, and that no soldier could get land unless he had considerable funds, or a good backing, said the Government had never made any distinction between men Without means and those with limited means, or with large sums of money. The only qualification for land or financial assistance was that the man should have had some farming experience and be in a position to make übo of the land allotted him. The Government had assisted over a thousand settlers to acquire rural land, whilst a considerable number of other men had been assisted to buy town residences. The Government had advanced to soldiers £1,536,000 and this sum didn't include the amount spent in the purchase of land under the Land for Settlement Act and afterward . proclaimed for soldiers' settlements.
