LABOUR ON THE COUNCILS.
Notwithstandinc the desire for change in local as well as general politics, Labour had no marked success at the municipal elections. In Auckland three seats out of 21 were won, in Wellington four out of 15 (v.'hich was less than was expected in view of the result of Parliamentary by-elections), in Christchurch, (> out of 16 (one more than in the last council) and in Dunedin Labour did not attempt to obtain representation. Mr. McCombs, M.P., polled a small minority for the Christchurch Mayoralty in a triangular contest, and in Wellington Mr. Read in another triangular contest came a very good second. In smaller towns Labour either'had small success or none. The attempt of women to obtain seats on the Wellington <_.ity Council was a bad failure. The highest on the list was a lady who bears the same name as a worthy exmayor—she came twentieth; but the next was eight places lower down. In Auckland, two lady candidates were successful, but both of these had previous municipal experience.
