NEW ZEALAND. j ri ] v 16—Wellington Steeplechase

THE WELLINGTON MEETING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Early Bird.'')

The present racing season will be brought to n clo?e by the Wellington Ilncius Club's meeting, which opens at Trer'tham to-day and concludes on Saturdny. Recent rains have made tho course fairly soft, and the going consequently mny'be on the heavy side. Nevertheless tho .-acinsc should be interesting, although the winners mny be hard to pirje. A few notes'on tho races and in-nbable starters should prove interesting.

Twenty-four is the number of contestants that "have paid no in the Stewards' Ho.nd^ap, of s?venf uvlotibs. but of ■these Bin; Blast may be written off. Crown Pearl hoa-ds the list with 11.7, and tho local horse North-East comes rext with 10.10. Mummer, ,who won a treble at G'sborne. Tins berni allotted tKa handy impost of 9.13. and Toney, who has boon going in the right way in his work on the local track, has D.'D. Styx i« vory well jnst now, and is handily handicapped at 9.6. The Ford^ll trained Kaniki lio« been put in with the minimum, iand if on tho spot should run n groat race. Of the others ni the bottom m.nrk. Amber and "White. "Black Lupin and Gnoiti^ look tho best. In a possible field of 20, the winner must take pome selecting, but Vvnpcanui punters will doubtless pin their faith to "KnniVi 'Mummer and Crmvn P.f\i.rl or Nnrth-P'nst.

First Hack .■nnd Hunters' S+pcplvclia.so of two and ia half miles, has an accontanc.-. of IS. of which Ranter leads the weights with 10.8 and Fireworks 10.6. Looking: through tho pro-b-ablus. the order of favouritism will most likely be Tim Oonlan 9,7 Napper Tandy 9.13 civd Davli^ht Bill 10.4. A puzzle ip afforded punters in "the Trial Plate, in which th-p fittest may turn un in Kow, Field Force (if not reserved for the Te Aro Handicap). Sn-fvot. Tho Wanganui and Winter Steeples winner, tho Marton-owned and trained Glenmore, holds pride of placo "-1: i -A 1' 3* Last >'ear tnj's gelding earned 10.0, but did not run into a place. There is no doubt that Glenmore has improved out of sight since the last , Wellington Steeples, as witness his frao | etrort m tii^ local .principal cross-coun-try event. The extra, quarter-mile may trouble him. but if ho oan win oveV three miles of ~he stiff Ellerslie country tho comparatively easy jomney ah .JTo-Hthnra roay not bother him. Tho Winter Hurdles, of two miles, is tho big and only hurdle event of the day. Pride of place has been given Tho Rover, who leads off with 10.12. On the Trenthiam track on Monday Tho Rover put up a fine performance on tho flat, one1 this brought him in demand. Tho early-favourite, Coronctted; has 10.- tc carry. Marton. tho Groat Northern Hurdles winner, appears handy at 10.7, and should run well. It would occasion little surprise if tho Marton trained and owned bracket carried off the double. Goodwin Park was also supported early, but was scratched on Monday. Nyland has 10. t .and Beacon 10.3, but both may be found wanting at the crucial time. Darby Paul looks handy with 10.1, and his running at the Wanganui meeting suggests that tho distance should just suit him. Added to this is his recent splendid track work, and Wanganuites will support him with a vengeance. Of tho !ight-weir.hts. /Watcheham and Prince Eddie should b« in the running. Callv Bridge will not start. Darby Paul, barton, and Coronetted or Watohdiain may prove to be :hc fit io.-r, to-day.

The To Aro Handicap should providt n good race. Iwonty-one having t\ cop;. Mogul, aid Dnnise Orme wi'l f-'oubiles.; bo well supported by tho public.
