THE CORPORATION GAS WORKS.

THE MANAGER'S ANNUAL REr

PORT

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR .

At the meeting of the.Borough Council on Tuesday evening the Gas Manager (Mr. G. D. Stone) submitted the following report:—

To His Worship the Mayor. Sir, —I have the honour to submit the following annual report and statement, showing the amount of business transacted in connection with the Gas Works Department, for the year ending March 31st, 1908.

The amount of profit available to be dealt with is £3006 10s 4d after paying out of this year's profits £109 Bs-3d.to-wards, extensions on meters, mains, and plant, and £135 6s 6d to make up the £2000 paid over to assist the rates, totalling £325 14s 9d, which would show the total profits made this year as £3332 5s Id. This amount would have been increased by ' several hundred pounds if the coal supplied had maintained its usual standard; but unfortunately it has considerably deteriorated; in fact, some cargoes were so bad that it was almost impossible to keep up the gas supply. During the year the ; gas sales by meter have" increased by over 20 per cent. The number of new; services lai'-i "214, the number of new meters connected 261, new gas, cookws sold and' connected 107, gas fires sold 'and connected 53. Over eight miles of cast and wrought iron pipes were laid during the year, which far exceeds any previois record. I wish to bring under your notice the amount paid for street lighting, viz., £2 10s per lamp per; annu.n. I would point out that the ordinary street lamp consumes from 18,000 to 19,000 feet per annum. The lamps in the centre of' the Avenue, which are lighted 365 nights in the year, consume about 25,000 feet per annum. ; - .The amount paid is about one-half of which it costs the works. If the Gas Department require any material or service from either of the other Borough Departments, such as alterataions to the water or sewerage pipes, repairing footpaths or streets, we have to pay the full cost as any other body. Therefore I consider it only right that the Gas Works should be credited w;ith the full value of material supplied /and sex-vices rendered. There are several matters in reference to future extensions which 1 propose to bring under your notice at your next meeting.
