LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
•|eW jSJtil *foJNp®^ 2nd, ; lß6 °: Sir, —On reading.the papery .concerning the war at Taranaki, I see tliat'a' favourite manceuvre of the natives is a forming of ani-
busoades, and thus cutting ;off any stray person -, ; or body of men : that may crime within their , range. : ,Now, I have lately Jwd occaaon to see the working of /fustraliim kangaroo dogs, and while watching their: perseverance and , ferocity in tracking and destroying native dogs, it struck -me that, it/ pack <of them, say thirty or forty,. would be a very good tiling for ; tracking out and attacking one of these ambuscades, when of course the Europeans would see where the danger lay, and would either .escape, of attack' and destroy them/ ’ I have no doubt that by applying to our friends in Australia, who sympathise so much • i with -us in :our present position, they, would . only be too happy- to supply us with. some of their'be3t dogs of this breed ; this might be a •great check to the natives lurking about and annoying out people, -as their fear of dogs is , well known. Hoping that this suggestion may be useful, I remain,-yoUr obdt. servant, ' * ■" A Backwoodsman,
August 27th, iB6O. Sin.-—There 'has been made by the road at Rutiki a small bridge over d watercourse ; the work was not‘offered to public competition. I have beard that the charge made for it was about £6O or .£65; had it been offered . for contract I bear about half that sum would
have accomplished the matter Surely there must.be some mistake in this report. I cannot, believe that- any honorable gentleman would be a party- to so reckless an abuse ami squandering of the public money, especially -at a time when otiir Provincial exchequer 9 30 low an ebb. Can you afford us any information whereby we may know the truth v I am, sir* ydqrs truly, , u: -r->'Open Sessima- ’
