THE MONAVALE SWAMP
It will be remembered that when the Premier visited the Waikato some time since, he, at the invitation of the Monavale Settlers’ Association, visited that district and inspected the lands there, which the settlers were anxious to have the Government’s assistance in draining. Mr Massey then promised he would do all possible to help in the matter. In fulfilment of that promise Mr J. B. Thompson, one of the Chief Government surveyors, visited Monavale yesterday, and in the absence of the president of the association, he was shown over the district by Messrs J. S. Fisher, C. C. Buckland,:B. Russo and Wallace (secretary of the association). They thoroughly traversed the swamp in all directions, and Mr Thompson was much struck with the ease with which it can be drained, there being several natural watercourses into which the water can be led. Of course a trial survey will have to be made before anything definite can be done, but Mr Thompson is of the opinion the task will not be a difficult one, and he stated that he would be visiting the place again at an early date to go more thoroughly into the matter. This is a most important subject for the settlers of the whole surrounding districts, and Mr Thompson thinks that if the land was not of much value its situation between adjacent towns would make it so.
