CARTERTON.

The Carterton Borough Council lias decided to strike a rate to assist the library.

A meeting of the management committee of the Rugby Union was held hero last night. It was decided to close the championship matches, Masterton being the winners for the season.

A tar-boiling plant was recently provided at the local gasworks, at a cost of £2OO. There is some talk of a South Wairarapa candidate offering himself for the vacant seat on the Wellington Education Board, caused by the resignation of Mr. A. W. Hogg. The memorial stone for the memorial square is to be purchased from Mr. T. Hoar, of Masterton. It will bo a broken column of red granite, standing 14ft., and will cost about £4OO. A committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society is at present canvassing Wellington for special prizes for the next show. Mr. Oscar Anderson, of Carterton, took six first prizes, six seconds, and three thirds at the Hastings show, to- £ gother with three specials and throo cups valued at £ls -15s, with his Old English Game. The overdraft of the Carterton Borough Council at the end of tho financial year was £1902. The total estimated expenditure for the current year is £1844. The Borough Council is considering the desirability of taking steps to prevent motor vehicles passing through the town with faulty silencers?
