THIS AFTERNOON'S MATCHES.

The weather was fine, but the grounds were a little 'greasy for this afternoon's football matches" "The attendance at Lancaster Park was very large, the sum of £53 lOe 3d being taken at the gates. The attraction for spectators was the match between the Merivale and Albion teams, which decided the Rugby Union's senior championship. Albion led by one pointy for the championship, and a win for Merivale would have made the teams . even, and necessitated another contest between them in order to decide the championehip. Merivale, however, though they had the better of the early play, failed to score, and Albion won the game after a keen struggle, by th& narrow margin of three points. The other matches claimed little attention. Christchurch managed to beat Sydenham by five points to nil, and Linwood had an easy victory over Canterbury College by twenty-seven point© to nil. Afternoon ( tea was provided on behalf of the Albion Club by Mesdames ■_ Bottle. Robson, Thomas and Evans (2) and Misses Langley and Atkinson. The championship contest will now be closed, and the next two Saturdays will be devoted to trial matches, in view of the interprovincial match against Taranaki on August 4.
