SIR JOSEPH WARD.

INTERVIEWED AT SAN FRANCISCO. [Peb Pbess Association.]

WELLINGTON, July 13. Sir Joseph Ward sailed from San Francisco in the Sierra to-day." Interviewed at San Francisco he urged the arrangement of a reciprocal treaty between America and New Zealand. He stated that he was sure that the colony would agree to the introduction of printing paper and tinned salmon in exchange for wool and kauri gum. He was not favourable to ; reciprocity in manufactured articles, <as the industries of New Zealand were the mest important side of the colony's industrial life, and articles .equal to those manufactured in any other country could be turned out by the colony's workmen. In his representations in America ha had urged th_ consideration of reciprocity in natural products, and he was emphatic in stating that manufactured articles from America or eHeewhevo oould not be considered. Ho had received a great \deal of practioal support to his proposal to place the two items, wool and kauri gum, on the reciprocal list in return for printing paper and tinned salmon, and he stated that doubtless other products, without detriment to either counta*y, could, after close investigation, 'be considered.
