" TUBE " DANGER.
NEW YORK TUNNEL FLATTENED JBY OVERHEAD WEIGHT
The startling disclosure was made on May 18 tihat 1200 ft of the Brooklyn " Tube " 'Tunnel, now being completed under tihe East River, had been flattened by fhe weight of sand and water above to such an extent tbat the trains had no room to pass. Tbe depression varied from 6in to 2ft.
The tunnel was begun in September, 1903, and ought to be completed < next September at a cost of £2,200,000, whereof the city contributes £400,000. A consulting expert declared that the damage would involve a delay of three years, but the constructing engineer and contractor maintained that it could safely be, patch-ed up by the 'end' of the yeai*.
Mr Charies M. Jacobs, an expert tunnel engineer, made the startling declaration that all the "tubes'' in "New York and elsewhere will flatten in the same manner in a varying degree, but that the process will not affect their safety.
