A FALSE RUMOUR.

A rumour gained currency in town this morning, and did not lose anything as it travelled, to. the effect that an enormously devastating tidal had wrecked the New Brighton Pier, and done much damage to property in the maritime borough. Numbers of people went down to see for themselves the effects of the wave, and the telephones were kept busy for a long time, asking and answering questions. The rumour, of course, was incorrect. An unusually heavy sea had been running all night, and at high water (10 a.m.) the sea was phenomenally high, and the waves were breaking over the fishing stage ; but no damage whatever was done either to that ctructure or to any property.
