A PUBLIC FUND.
Several offers of assistance for the sufferers have been made from various sections of the cammu: v. Mr W. B. Clarkson has informed the Mayor that if a citizens' relief fund is .inaugurated he will subscribe £50. The Mayor is of opinion that before any action is taken by him in regard to a calling of a meeting of citizens to consider the question of relief, further details should be obtained. He has therefore sent the following telegram to the Hon W. HallJones at Cheviot:— "Kindly wire me full particulars regarding losses by settlers at Cheviot, and. if possible, arrange to see me on your return." It is thought if a public fund is raised it should be available for all
who have suffered by the earthquake, no matter in what district they resided. ; i THE CHILDREN'S HOLIDAY. ' Mr W. E. Sheltcm, Omslow Street, Sb Albamis, writes, offering to take one or two very young children until the- crisis is over Mr A. Heyder, of the Brighton Dairy, writes that he will be glad to find accommodation for two little girls, between the age of four and ten, if possible.
