MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE.

THE OPENING CEREMONY. SPECIAL TRAINS FOR THE EXHIBITION. A full meeting of the Executive Council of the Jubilee Exhibition was held last evening, when Mr R. Allan (President) was in the chair. The President reported that 350 invitations had been issued for .the opening ceremony. Practically the whole of the upstairs had been taken by the public, and the down stairs portion would be reserved. Messrs Wheeler amd Son asked for permission to'take a photograph of the committee on the stage of the new hall after the opening of the Exhibition, and the matter was left in the Jhands of the President to arrange. < ' " Letters were received—From the -retail jewellers of Christchurch, protesting against the granting df right to sell jewellery amd other goods'not manufactured in the Exhibition, which they considered was unfair to the shopkeepers who kept their businesses going in the city all the year round. ! After considerable discussion, it was re- ■ solyed to reply that no infringement of the rules was contemplated or would be allowed, and that exhibitors should be informed that the rule would be strictly enforced. j It was resolved to admit the young 3a- i dies of the Telephone Exchange to the Ex- ! hibitdon on the same terms as those given i to hospital nurses. j Mr Fro-stick reported on the offers of the j various bands to play at the opening of the Exhibition, and it was resolved not to iengage any band on the opening day. Tho arrangements for the opening ceremony were reported, and Mr R. C. Bishop was appointed marshal. The Decorative Committee was empowered to procure permanent badges for the various, committees. The Chairman reported that at the opening ceremony only the invited qua . and' those who paid 2s 6d would be admitted into the building, and it was resolved that at 3 p.m. the Exhibition proper should be opened to the public at the ordinary rate of charge, Is, and should remain open until 5.30 p.m. It was resolved to request the Mayor -to > declare Thursday a holiday from noon. The President was requested to ask the Government to close the public offices at the samei time, and, on the motion of Mr Bishop, ib was decided to write to the Chairmen of the School .Committees in and around Chris, tchurch, asking them to close the schools at noon. Mr Charters said that there was a. 10.20 p.m. train to Lyttelton four nights a week, and residents along the line were anxious to have a train every night. It was resolved to ask the Railway Department to ( arrange for this, and also to run a late train | on the northern lines as far as Rangiora two nights a week during the Exhibition. It was reported that the Defence Department, in reply to an application, had refused to allow volunteers outside the city to travel free on the railway to attend the | Jubilee procession on Dec. 17, and it was j decided to communicate with the Govern- : ment on the matter. j The Chairman of the Building Committee ! reported that the whole of the buildings had j been finished that day, and the lavatories would be connected on the following ingTho President thanked Mr R.
