Tho steamer Rotomahana arrived from Wellington early yesterday morning, and wns placed in the graving-dock. She was cleaned and painted below water-line, and came out of dock again last evening, sailing for Wellington after arrival of the express from tho south. The Norwegian schooner Menja comes to this port from Melbourne. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's new steamer Waiwera will make Lyttehon her first port of call on her maiden trip to the colony. H.M.S. Curacoa, which was on the Aus-. tralian station for some years, narrowly escaped being run down in Plymouth Sound. A report of the incident by the English mail dated Jan. 24 says: — "H.M.S. Collingwood arrived in Plymouth Sound on Jan. 23. In coming into harbour in the evening, she ran into the training ship Curacoa, which was at anchor in the Barnpool, knocking a hole in her starboard side. The Curacoa began to leak badly, and two dockyard tugs 'went to her assistance. She was taken into harbour and afterwards docked. The collision ■was due to the tide carrying the Collingwood down on tho Curacoa." The efforts which are being mado to bring about the establishment of international courts of arbitration for the settlement of disputes arising out of collision at sea have all along had tho warm support of tho Hamburg • Chamber of Commerce. Tho report of that body for 1898 states that it haa succeeded in securing to a limited extent the adoption of a clause in " bills of lading " by virtue of which tho shipowner is authorised by tho persons interested in the cargo to submit any claims they may havo to make in collision cases to a court of arbitration. This clause, it is pointed out, cannot bo stigmatised as unfair to tho cargo owner, seeing that in these cases it is scarcely ever in the interests of tho cargo owner, but rather those of the underwriters, which are really at stake, and that it was. the underwriters themselves who started the proposals in favour of these arbitration courts. The Chamber expresses the hope that the precedent set by the two greatest (German) shipping companies in. having this clause inserted in their bills of lading will be followed by other owners. The report adds that after consultation with the Hamburg Underwriters' Association the Chamher has drawn up a code of rules for the working of the Hamburg Court of Arbitration for collision cases, and expresses the hope that prominent jurists and skilful mercantile and nautical experts will not fail to come forward as assessors.
