ASHBURTON.

■ There was a large entry at Ashburton . yesterday, nearly 20,000 sheep being . yarded. The bulk of the entry consisted of breeding ewes, many of them having been passed at the fair at Tinwald last i week. The attendance was good, ancl there . was a little more life in the sale than was , manifested last week, but prices remained about the same, and competition was not 1 keen. The butchers' pens were wellfilled with ■ fair quality sheep, a larger proportion than : usual being merino ewes. Pat cross-bred . ewes made 6s to 9s, merinoes 3s to 6s. A . line of forward half - bred two - tooth . mixed sexes, almost ready 'to freeze, made ' 10s 7d, and another of three-quarter-breds, 1 also in forward condition, 10s 4d. Breedi ing ewes sold at from 2s 7d to 5s for ; old aiid failing-mouthed ones, and as . high as 8s ld for good, sound-mouthed. A nice line of well-grown ewes from Mr ' Allan M'Lean's Waitaki Estate sold at from 7s 6d to Bs. Part of the Balmoral merino < ewes were sold at 4s, a considerable fall on s the price paid for them at Culverden. , Some nice young* cattle were offered, but there was little or no demand, ; the best prices obtained being £6 for a good steer and from £4 to £5 for heifers. 1 In the pig yards baconers made from 20s i to 40s, stubblers 13s 6d. •
