THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

TO THH EDITOB OP TUB BTAE. Sir,— There is some little danger that amidst tho excitement of a general election the immediate interosts of this city may be overlooked, and tho ratepayers may unintentionally remain apathetic with reference to tho Municipal election. Will you therefore kindly afford me space to urgo upon the burgesses of tho south-east ward tho urgent need there is that every endeavour should be made by them to attend at their polling pla'oe-^St John's schoolroom — on Thursday, and to record their Totes in favour of Cr. Ayers. If for no other reason, this gentleman should command support on accouLt of tho insolence shown towards l:im by the so-called Bate* payers' Association. By a prominent membor of that precious clique, Councillor Aycra was asked to defer his nominal ion, upon the ground that the Association unanimously desired to have him as ono of their candidate!. I Councillor Ayers agreed to defor his noniina- [ tion, considering the point immaterial, and then he was deliberately tlmist aside, and was rofcrred to at tho meeting of the Association in a most contemptuous manner. Tho burgesses, Sir, will surely show by their voting what they think of such utterly oontomptiblo conduct. Apart from this, the records of tho City Council for tho past year bliow that Councillor Ajcrs hat closely watched tho interests of the south-east quarter of the city. For example, he it was who co persistently urged on the oreelion of the Barbadoes stroet bridge, a work that will immensely increuao tho facilities of the district ; and he was a primo mover in the improvements effeotod along Lower High streofc and by Barbadoes street. Tho candidate who should deservedly head tho poll in the Southeastward is Councillor Ayors. — I am, &c , EAST BELT.

TO TUB EDITOR OE THE STAII. ." ' Sib, — From an extensive acqaintanc« amongst tho burgesafß of tlio north-east ward, I learn that there is a strong feeling agaibst the election or ono of tho Ratepayers' Association nominees, ox-Oounoillor Thomson. The feeling is not to bo wondered at, for no maQ in Christchuroh is a bettor band at snubbing anyone whom lie may think a bit below him in tho social scale, than is long ihomßon. I don't fancy it can yet Jmro been forgotten how on tho occasion of tho dinner in the Provincial Chamber (tho oponing of the Chrißtchurch - Dunedin line), tbis Bupercilious nobody directly insulted all ths representatives of the press from far and near, and so made himself supremely ridiculous and utterly contoinptiblo in tho eyes of the whole Colony, at tho game time bringing a certain measuro of disgrace upon this city. It seems that he aspires lo be once more Mayor of Cbristohurch, in the hope that he may be enabled to sun himself in the smileg of royalty. " HeaTcn forfend," for should that happen his self-consequence would hftvo elevated him to such an extent that he would nover agaiu be able to discorn ordinary mortals. There aro Fome eensiblo business men amongst the candidates. Let tho burgps3Gß eliow theii 1 discrimination — their sound judgment — by excluding Long Nobody. — I am, &c, A BURGESS.
