Defondunt, who denied al knowledge of the offence, was fined 20s. Assaui/ting A "Wife. — Joseph Hannai was charged with assaulting his wife, Rebecci Hannan, on Feb. 2<i. Ho was also chargec with habitual drunkenness and cruelty to hii wife, and with neglecting to maintain hi family. Mr Slater appeared for complainant who stated that her nusband was habitually drunk, and had frequently beaten her ; tha ho did not maintain her or his two children she therefore prayod for an order of niainte nance, and for protecting her earnings. Tin evidence of complainant was corroborated fr other witnesses, one of whom, Sorgt. Hughea deposed that defendant was becoming a con firmed loafer ; he had not been working fo: five weeks, but drinking. The Bench iincc defendant £5 for the assault, or in defaul one month's imprisonment, to find sureties o the peace for twelve months, himself in £5C and two sureties of £26 each. Mrs Clarkson eaid that he husband was habitually drunk, and she there fore prayed for her earnings to bo protected Defendant said that he was willing to mak an arrangement with his wife. The Bencl adjourned the case to March 10, in order t< give the parties an opportunity to come to ai arrangement.
