On the arrival of the mid-day train from Christchurch the ps. Novelty, with the health aad emigration officers and a number of visitors, left the breastwork and proceeded down to the ship, which was anchored about two miles outside, off the North llead. On arrival alongside, the customary questions being satisfactorily answt red, the vessel was declared free. On going on board, all were heartily welcomed by Captain Fox, and by the courtesy of Mr March our reporter was allowed to inspect the whole of the emigrant compartments, and found them a pattern of cleanliness; the single girls' cabins were especially worthy of notice, and showed that great attention had hern paid to this part of the ship. The married couples' compartment wa3 very satisfu'tory, and indeed we may add the entire s'.ip showed that the greatest credit was due to the captain and officers. We notice amongst the latter Mr Winter, chief officer, formerly of the ship Blue Jacket. ~!ie following is the captain's report : — Left the docks on Nov. 4, and on the 9th landed the pilot off the Start, and sailed with a fine breeze on the 28th ; boarded the ship Sydney, 83 days out from Singapore to Liverpool, 3.56 N. 23.20 W., and sent home letters by her ; was in company with the ship Princess Tomanatta, 30 days out from Shields to Bombay ; crossed the equator on the 30th Nov., in long. 27.42 W. ; spoke the barque Arcturus, 36 days out from Liverpool to Rio Grande ; Dec. 4, spoke the ship Norwood, 24 days from Falmouth to Bombay ; Oa December W, in lat. 25.50, long. 23.2 D W., was boarded by the captain of the barque Transit, from San Francisco, and supplied them with stores, also sent home leteers.
