THE TUNNEL
The following ad interim report has been •ent in by Mr Paterson : — Chri9tchurch, Canterbury, 15th May, 1869. Sir, — In accordance with the request in your Honor's letter of the 12th insr., I lost no time in proceeding with the inspection of the works in the tunnel on the line of the Lyttelton and Christchurcli Hail way, and have now completed a careful examination of the works throughout the whole length of the tunnel. I have not yet had time to consider and prepare a detailed report upon this subject, but as there is probably some anxiety felt as to the result of my inspection, ao far as regards the safety of the line, I take the earliest opportunity of informing your Honor that, although some parts of the tunnel are not in a satisfactory condition, I do not think there is any danger such .'is to necessitate the immediate closing of the railway for public traffic. In the meantime I would recommend that the tunnel should be cureful'y watched, and that the present precautions for the inspection and safety of the tunnel should be continued. I have the honour to he, Sir, Your obedient servant, T. Patekson. Hia Honor the Superintendent of Canterbury.
