MARAETAI.
The ancient bat excellent custom in giving the ladies the directing power in society once in four years resulted in a great, yraud aud joyous entertainment, in the shape of a ball in the Maraetai school room, on Friday, 9th. It more than redounded to the ladies' credit ; it showed that in Maraetai at least, the male 'haman brute' was nowhere alongside the lady, who had profusely decorated the ball room with palms and flowers, and the supper table with tasty edibles. Nor did the administrative ability btop here, but as programme-providers and as leaders, the ' bachelor <■<,' as the University calls young ladies, shone to advantage, especially Miss Keeny, as M.C., and everyone was made to feel at home, and merry and lively, so that dancing was kept up till sunrise.... What a pity it is, but 'tis so, that some people have no respect lor themselves or others around them, but it seems it was so at Clii ball by one or two spooney folks who made silly exhibitions of themselves.
