SOCIAL AT WINCHESTER.

A very enjoyable social was held m th« Victoria Hall, Winchester, on Friday evening m aid of the funds of the halL The weather proved bright and frosty, but the attendance was not so good as it should have been, on account of the short notice given and the want of publicity. The hall trustees, Messrs R. Smith, H. E. Smith, Wm. Harrison <uid T. L. Hart, have made extensive additions to the hall, which is now one of the most comfortable and commodious of the kind m South Canterbury. The part of the building jusb erected is 23ft by 18ft, and contains a neat and handy stage, most suitable for concerts, a nice dressing-room for the ladies, and a supper-room. The whole of this , work has been carried out by the trustees, [ assisted by Messrs Barrett and F. W. Shal- '■ lard, and these gentlemen deserve the greatest credit for displaying so much public spirit. On Friday evening the recent additions proved of the greatest con- 1 venience, as the whole floor of the hall could be devoted to dancing. Messrs Mundv (violin) and Heap (piano) supplied capital music, and those present had a •. very pleasant evening. Refreshments, provided by the ladies of the district, were , handed round, and much appreciated, Mrs J H. E. Smith having charge of this important department. The trustees desire to thank Mrs Langdon for the use of • her fine piano, the ladies who provided refreshments, and all those who have assisted them m their building operations.
