Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 6. At a banquet given to Mr Buchanan, member for Wairarapa, at Carterton on Saturday night, a number of members of the Opposition, including Captain Russell and Mr Kolleaton spoke. The former impressed on the party the necessity of organising if they wished to beat the Government at the next election. A movement is on foot to send three miners to Klondike, m the interest of a syndicate, who will find the necessary money. At present, however, there seems to be considerable division of opinion as to the amount likely to be required. Some prospectors think £150 sufficient, and others as much as £700. The Chief Justice leaves Auckland on Friday to proceed to Raratonga, with a view to enquiring into the trouble there between the British Resident and the Arikis or chiefs. Mr Justice Denniston will take up the judicial duties of the Chief Justice at Wellington, meanwhile. OHRISTCHURCH, December 6. On Saturday morning two Jersey cows, the property of Mr James Row, Windsor Park, were found dead m the paddock, there being no way of accountingfor their death. One was found to have frothed at the mouth, indicating the possiDility of poison Early yesterday morning the trotting horse Vermont was found dead m a paddockat Woolston. Mr Allen, veterinary surgeon, is of opinion that the horse was poisoned and had been given either oxalic acid or tartar emetic. His Excellency the Governor hasoffered a free pardon to any person not being the principal offender or offenders m the recent horse killing cases here. A reward of £100 is also offered. The Ohristchurch Pigeon Club flew a race from Wellington on Saturday. The winner completed the distance m 6hrs 49min 45see. At 7.30 p.m. five out of the seven birds released had homed. Inconnection with therecent imprisonment of bookmakers for tote betting a petition was sent to the Minister of Justice, praying that the sentence be reduced so far as imprisonment was con cerned, A reply was received on Saturday from the Minister, stating that having carefully enquired into the surrounding circumstances, he regretted that he could not recommend his Excel lency to grant the request. Daniel Pasche, aged 67, died suddenly at his residence, Addington, this morning. He had been ill for only a day, and it is alleged that his illness was caused by a blow. There is to be an enquiry. DUNEDIN, December 6. An elderly woman Hay died on Saturday as the result of injuries to her back through falling over a bank m Queen Street. At a meeting of the Otago Rowing Association it was decided to hold the championship regatta on Thursday, the 26th Mai-ch, and a sub committee was appointed to decide about a course. James Jenkins, 67 years of age, was found dead m his hut on Waitakane Hill. He had no friends and was almost destitute. Death is supposed to be from natural causes.
