TEE DROUGHT AND THE PUBLIC HEALTH.
Tlio effects of tho drought upou health will probably be Been later. The damage to crops and the failure of milk supplies will undoubtedly have its influence in promoting disease ; whilst the necessity which lias been found in many districts fur obtaip.ing water from improper sources will, it may be feared, lead to an increased prevalence of enteric fevor. But ono of the greatest bonefits of rain is its power of cleansing tho air and earth, and it may be anticipated that an increased diarrbceal death-rato will be found in those towns whore this' disease is usually prevalent in summer. On the other hand, the her.fc of the weather is probably responsible in It is now two months since a single death from this disease was registered in the metropolitan district, and tho cases that have occurred have been trifling in number. The effect of heavy rainfall at the conclusion of the drought will bo watched with interest, for it may bo expected that watercourses will be especially polluted at that time. —Lantet-
