MOUNT COOK RATEPAYERS' MEETING.
Ou Monday last the annual meeting of the ratepayers of the Mount Cook Road district was held at Burgess', Burkes Pa3s. ' There w"as< a good attendance. F. Teschemaker Esq.,, took- the chair, and briefly explained the present state of the Road Board, m reference to the expenditure of the past year. Messrs. Matson and C. Ensor _were elected members m the place of two resigned. : A .discussion then, ensued m ■ refereuce to the rating of the district ; when it transpired that the Government was at the present time deriving a revenue of about £4000 per annum from pastoral rents m the district ; and that after the first of May next the revenue would increase- to about £8000 a year. The Government had voted £500 for the district last year, but the Board had only received £125 of that vote. It was unanimously resolved that no rate should be levied m the district, as the whole of the roads were still unmade, and iv many places quite ini-passibUTiri-rainy weather ; 'and it was considered to be very unjust that the Government should ask the settlers to tax themselves to make the roads, when a very large revenue was yearly raised m the district, which "was appropriated by thV* Government for general purposes iv * the' •northern part of the province.
