THE. REV. A. REID AND PROFESSOR TYNDALL.
To the Editor of tho Thames' Advertiser. Sib,—To your correspondents "One who was There" and " Fair Play," [ am indebted in respect to a correction of my quotation of Mr Heid's speech. I trust that they and that Mr'fieid also will accept my explanation, namely, that I was misled by an error in your report as described in your foot-note this morning. I may say, however, that I wish "One who was There" could modify his style or reserve his strength for the next City of York meeting. With regard to my humble opinions about truth and science, I keep them pretty much at home, not from selfishness or being ashamed of them, but from expediency and honest suspicion of thrir value. However, Ido claim the right to have opinions, seeking no credit if they are sound, and confessing no shame if they are otherwise. I have no more control of my convictions than of my stature, and therefore fail to understand why I am reproached on that score. lowo Mr Uc-id an ample apology for having untentionally misquoted him. If he really recommended the study of Darwin, riuxley, and lyhdall, I am ready to acknowledge him in~ the frout rank of liberal divines, believing that the "good time" refern d to will be hastened by the facilities offered, and by the encouragement given /by the Legislature and by the pulpit to a free and fearless inquiry into all subjects by all means. " Fair Play" conomdes with the following sontence:—"lt is not because of the Professor's scientific utteuances that the pulpit has taken; the matter up, but because he travelled outside of that (of what ?), and in' prolonging his vision backward, revives paganism.'" Now, sir, in the whole history, of the past no man ever overstepped the narrow limits prescribed for investigation -, me < : .li
