The annual meeting of the: Borough Council was held yesterday for the purpose of settling the accounts, and of electing a Mayor for the next.year., All the v members of Council were present. .■•

The Mayoe said that this being the annual meeting, the first thing before .the Council was to pass the accounts. The ■printed statement of 'the accounts had been before them.for some time, so that "

they would be prepared to vote upon them.

Mr Bum said be had looked through the accounts, and they seemed to be in proper order. He would move that they be passed and allowed by the Council. : Mr Macnab seconded the motion, which was put and agreed to unanimously.

The Mayob said that the next business jefore the Council was the election of a kTayor for the next twelve months. Mr lenshaw said he had great pleamre in proposing that Mr William Davies be re-elected to the office of iayor. In doing so he might state, how fcwas that he thought, under the _cirumstances there should be a re-election. Io felt opposed to the idea that any man ir body of men should get into the habit if thinking any office peculiarly their own. M the present, Mayor had not been a nil term in officb, and the same spirit of ■espeet entertained for'him which )rompted them to. elect him _at first, yould warrant tho proposal to give him a 'ull ternvbf office. Ho did not think that, is a rule, the same man should.be elected o such an offico two or, three timos, )ocause it seemed to be a reflection that here was not a sufficiency of men com>etent to take' the' office. He believed here were men in the community fully as lompotent as'tho present Mayor. It was i high honour to be selected to fill the lighest position they had to award. : ' Mr Maonab seconded tho motion. • He aid that the first Mayor of a borough iad a great deal to do. The present iccupant of the offico had only been nine nonths in office, and he did not think, hey would be doing him justice if they low elected another. He quite agreed vith Mr Jtenshaw that no man should ie elected for a series of years. The Mayob then put the motion, which, ras carried uuanimously. The Mayor thanked the Council for e-electing him. He had hitherto enleavoured, as jar as was' in-his powoHo ulfil the duties assigned to him as Mayor, ind lie would try to do tho same again, ie did not intend to make a long speech, is he thought speeches at the best but a iubslitute for work. He was grateful for bo favour shown to hinvduriug the:-nine uonths ho had been in office by. the memicrs; Ho had to thank them for the ;ssistanco they had given: him, wpod that the. agreement whiohv had prevailed amongst them would still continue. ;,:;■:;:,. ~:V-; "'■ A special mooting was oppoiuted for.
