MB. MACKAY AND MR. LUSK.
To the Editor of the Thames Advertiser. Sib,—You appear from your article in to-day's paper to be surprised that the new -_uckland paper, the Echo, should write in a manner calculated to incite the natives torepudiate their bargains and keep Ohinemuri closed. I beg of you to allow me to place the public in possession of a f'act-and I can vouch for the accuracy of it—which will show at once the contemptible maliciousness of the person who has been writing these articles against Mr Mackay and the opening of Ohinemuri. At the time of the last Superintendency election, Mr Lusk (now editor of the Echo) made some remarks about Mr MaGkay, which were grossly impertinent. The latter then to my knowledge told a friend of Mr Lusk's that he would " pull Mr Lusk's nose" the first chance he got. This came to Mr Lusk's ears, as was intended, and since that time he and Mr Mackay have not been on speaking terms. Anyone who knows the littleness of Mr Lusk's mind, will not be surprised at the malice he has been spitting out, nor at the falsehoods he has written to gratify his spite. Mr Lusk is not, however, injuring Mr Mackay so much as he is hurting the inhabitants of this field, who are endeavouring now to strengthen the hands of the Government in their efforts to open Ohinemuri. Perhaps the writings of.Mr Lusk. may also serve the purpose ot the Auckland land speculators.' and may possibly enable them to monopolise a little more of the country.
I trust thatjou will kindly insert this letter, becaufffl am certain that the facts I have given will explain the cause of the attacks made on Mr MackaybyMr H. H. Lusk,—l am, &c, JPaib Play. Shortland, Nov. 19,1874.
