The Premier and Postmaster-General of Queensland arrived in Sydney on the ,30th ultimo, to confer with Mr Parkcs and Mr Yogel in reference to telegraphic communication with Singapore and the Torres mail service. It is proposed to expand the service and to employ swifter steamers. Questions of postal receprocity and the registration of debentures on the London Stock Exchange are to be dis-

cussed. The s.s. ' City of Adelaide' takes next month's Californian mail, The report of the Australian Mutual Benefit Society was unanimously adopted. The gross surplus exhibited in the quinquennial balinc-shnet amounts to £295,899, and £24,714 is the estimated increase in the value of Government debentures requiring re-valuation at the quinquennial period. Taken at the market price on the 30th September, the amount set apart for distribution is £235,185.

Kew teas at auction realised 2s l|d per lb. A schooner bound from Newcastle to New Zealand put in here dismasted. Melboukne, October 3. James Gair, late of Preston, near Melbourne, au old colonist, is dead. Commercial. —The markets are dull. Breadstuff's are rising; flour is £12 10s 6d to £12155. Oats are dull, and quotations rule 5s to 5s 2d for common to good feed, while up to 5s 6d is required for milling samples. Other news is uninteresting. Adelaide, October 3. A motion has been carried for 'a preliminary survey of a lino of railway from Adelade to effect a junction with the Yictoriau line. Wheat is steady at 5s Id, but none offering. Forest, the explorer, has arrived at Peak's station. It is proposed to give him a public banquet. The Adelaide Government will place boats at the crossing places on the rivers en-route for the Palmer goldfields.
