THE UPPER THAMES-THE KING MAKES HIS OWE POWDER.

(from a correspondent.) OniNEirupj, Oct, 5,1874, Te I{ira appears quite pleased since liis return from Shortland and Whakaliwoi. Having received some money from Mr Mackay has helped to put him in a good humour with himself and every one else. Ho is going to turn his money to a practical use by putting some good post and rail fences round his cultivations. He has given some Europeans the contract to do the work. The natives this season have turned their attention more towards the cultivation of wheat, and mean to go in very extensively next season iu the production of this life-sustaining and gold-producing grain. Te Hira is delighted to hear that some European is manufacturing powder at Tokangamtilu for the King. Jleport says his Majesty is distributing the powder to the different districts, haviug sent live casks to the Tauranga natives. _ A little has found its way down into this district, but the natives say it is dumpish, dirty looking stuff, and therefore not likely to be of much use because of its tendency to foul tho gun.after a few discharges,

The road between this district and Shortland is a disgrace to both Provincial and General Governments, being almost impassable for man or horse. It should be put iti thorough good repair before the summer is gono, to sustain tho large traffic that will lie on it towards the end of this summer in consequence of the district being opened to Europeans, r lho news of Haora Tipa's death was received with regret on accouut of his many good qualities. Tho Ohinomuri natives will not go to cry over him till after they have planted most of their crops. Mr Mackay lias been daily and anxiously looked for by the natives, he having promised to visit them a month back, but having been detained by business in Auckland.
