THAMES BROUGH COUNCIL.

An adjourned meeting of the Thames Borough Council was held last evening, the special business being to decide upon the tenders for the construction of the road up the Waio-Earaka Creek. Present —the Mayor, Messrs Anthony, Macnab, Butt, Ehrenfried, and Brown,

The Council's By-Laws.—A letter was read from the Inspector under the Public Healths Act calling attention to several parts of the first by-law, where the " proper officer" was spoken of, aud askiug the Council lo decide who the proper officer was. Some discussion took place regarding the enforcing of the bylaws, in the course of which somo of the members expressed their opinion that tbey ought not to be too particular. It was agreed to postpone tbe consideration of the letter of the inspector.' The Biudge over the Uape Cheek:.— A letter was read from Mr Spencer (cbairman of the Parawai District Board), stating that that Board had written a letter to the Superintendent requesting that tho £150 which they had agreed to pay as their share of the cost of tho bridge over the Uape Creek, should be paid over to the Borough Council out of money coming to the Board.—No answer had been returned.

Opening of Baillie-stbeet.—A letter was read from Mr Dewar, asking leavo to open the street, to take a pipe from the main-pipe at _ Mary-street to his residence.—Permission was granted to open the street.

Objections to Eating.—Several objections to rating were put in, and it was agreed to go into the matter at next meeting, on the 15th October, and to hear then any objections, so that parties should bo saved from going into the Eesident Magistrate's Court.

Accounts. — Several accounts were ordered for payment.—Mr Ehrenfried moved that the Valuers' account be paid. They had guaranteed that they would attend, if required, to give any explanation.—J'he account was ordered to be paid. The Waio-ILakaka Eoad.—The tenders for the Waio-Karaka road were then opened. The following were the tenders:— Alexander Bagnall, £666; John Brett, £989; H. Kawdon, £973 17<; K. H. Blake, for self and party, £788; McOormick Brothers, £8M 10s 4d; Jobn Goonin, £1.192; E. Gallagher, £815; P. Dillon, £B'l7 'Is; (" required ten weeks to completo the work," six being the time specified); Alexander Watson, £9<l<l 10s; (" weather permitting"); G. P. Lambert, £1,200; ti Hart, £717 4s; M. Kinsella, £892 7s.—Mr Anthony proposed that Mr Bagnall's tender be accepted, subject to arrangements being made with the companies for the guarantee of the money.—This was agreed to. The Mayor Baid that tlio committee met with the companies that morning. They did not como to any understanding. Ho would like a distinct expression of what the Council thoughta safo guarantee from the companies. He did not know whether the directors of the companies had power to guarantee. He understood the Queen of the May would be prepared to give a cheque marked. Tho City of York was represented by only one director.—Mill icks said the City of London would do what the others would, and ho did not anticipate any difficulty there. He did nob see any hardship in the companies being called on to pay soon, as they would have to pay as the work advanced.—Mr Butt Baid it was unfair of these companies to proceed as they had done.— Tho Mayor said that he could almost say that two of the compauies would lodge money in the bank to-morrow. —Mr Brown proposed that if two directors of tho companies would give their personal guarantee in addition to the guarantee of tho company, that they proceed with the work.-the Mayor did not think it was necessary to ask tho personal security of tho directors, if they had a cheque from the companies it should be sulliuiout.— Mr Brown said the directors were willing to become liable.—Mr Brown's motion was agreod to.
