MINING MATTERS.

Crown Peince—Should the reefs in the new level continuo as rich as they have shown themselves to be on every occasion when stone was broken-down since the new, level was opened, it will exceed the most sanguine expectations of the manager or the shareholders. Only two reel's are at present being driven on. These are the Nos. 1 and 2. is'fbur feet thiok on nn'average, and con-

tains a good show of gold through; the whole of the lode, but is particularly rich ,ncar the centre and.on tb,c ,hanging-wall side. It is being' driven on at both sides .of the cross-but}' and go\& shows, in, each, 'face. Ihe No'. 2' reef "is"smaller, 1 but the jstoneis equally rich, perhaps better on 'the whole. It averages 15 inches. Stone was broken down from, both reefs yesterday, and SOlb's-'of-'tiblr picked-stuff- and specimens were taken out in the'afternoon. A similar quantity came to- handthe previous day from the block of-the No. 1 reef, which had been stripped when bur last report was written'; contributing about2olbs df-rich l 'stuff.''''.'Crushing l for' the company is to bo Icbmme'nced'early ; next week.

! Middle Stab Tribute.—An excellent yield was obtained from crushing for ihe tributers of the- Middle Star: There were 3 Mns-and about 30.1bs';6f specimens put .through- ; at Alfred battery, tor the ..very handsome return of 33ozs gold. , . *"" | Twenty-third of June,—4 small p'ar- 1 fielof specimens whs crushed yesterday tor the tributers of the Twenty-third of June mine, and a handsome ,yie|d of 10 ounces gold was lodged, in the Bank-of New Zealand as the"result: ' !,:: '

i Exchange.—Gold has been visible iii : some of the stone broken out of the south drive on the Exchange reef, and although the show is not very rich It is nevertheless satisfactory. This is the first gold which has been visible since the decided increase; 'an'the,. ; reef,, although {the'; Equality of the lode itself was in . every respect encouraging. The drive ' in this direction on the course of; the r,'eef is now in 70' feet, and ihelode maintains ' .an average thickness of from 4 to 4| feet •of stone which is expected to crush well. , i Crrr of London.—The- trial crushing 'from the east and west cross-reef near ;tpe City of J.ork boundary, which is now [progressing;'alj the Prince Alfred battery,'' will not be iA finishe'd up until Monday, jnVxt, as th,ere are, still, about 10; loads of .stuff to' , .be ; 'put; r thrdiigii ,'The .stuff sh'o^B'amalgam II OH / -tiie plate's, l , biit' -.as the parcel,is; aVtrial from J .a new reef have nolneatis of judging of its rel'a- \ 4ive riehn l ess', ! and"shair ! therefore Vefrairi fpm expressing any opinion its, ■quality until the crushing is'completed? 'and'the'iam'algaiii retorted; ''•■'■'■''•"'' ?■'''''<;■ I ; Albion ' -Tributes.—A- good crtiahing "of about; 10,0; lons' ! 'of' stuff from'Kelly's, p\A miiiels'hbw going on" at the Prince' 'Alfreds battery,: and' will probably % .completed to-day. The tributers, Messrs; .Oatran and party, have been very successijil in this tribute, for although the average ; of the stuff'is not very rich it is easily' taken out, and they crush on an average about 100 tons a month. Immediately, 'on the completion of this crushing a small lot will ho put through as a trial for Messrs Northy and party at the same, battery. This stuff has been taken from ajuew leader further'into'the hill than

those from which the recent rich returns have been obtained, but the stone looks promising," and' is well worth a trial. ■Should it prove payable it will form a valuable addtion lb the other lodes in hand. . ,

I Old for this company will tab place to-day, and ; will terminate the crushing for this company at the Moanataiari battery. ■ It has for some time past been carried on by the company at considerable disadvantage, but ah engagement hiving been entered into by the former minager and ;direotors to" employ a force of 20 head for three .■months, there was nothing for it but to continue crushing such sfuff as was most readily available. During the last week ,oply ten head .have been at work but, the general crushing, only shaped 'njoderately on the 'plates. .During 'the last few days gold has shown pretty freely in the stopes, and some good specimens.and picked stuff was obtained' when crushed, will assist the general'average'very materially.' '■ The : company's ..own crushing mill: will probably;;be started to.wprk next week. , ';Qdee ; n':Of BEA,UTY.-'The show of amalgam .made by the stuff sent to the mill from the.company's mine during the present week was twice as good as that of. tl'ie preceding one. The reason of this is that last weok the stono was'exclusively from the No. 2 reef, but this week stgping was started on the. No. 1 reef, and the latter being much richer, has made the difference. There will be tuo usual retoYlings tp-,day,..and the return will, we have ; no doubt, be a good one; but there have not been so many.stampers at,work this fortnight as the. ; precedingonej.a deduction, of 20, head having been made in tlie crushing^force in conspquence : of the

difficulty of getting the stuff carted to tko

mills., j There "are, however, 63 head of stampers .still at work, and this force will be maintained for the present, and an increased force will be employed as soon as opportunity offers for forwarding' the stuff by the'new street tramway which is being laid along Oampboil and Pollea streets.

: Baito Sjiim.—JTho.vicli show'of gold 5 ; id the new winze, to which we have already'' alluded, continued on Thursday and yes. terday in the Bright Smile mine, and another fine parcel of about 501bs of specimens came to hand on Thursday evening., Jhe general crushing for this company is showing up better than usual. Infect the show was'never so rich at the batteries.since the new level was opened, and at the Imperial Crown battery, where. :25 head of stampers are employed, 1340z3 of hard-squeezed amalgam was obtained on Thursday after 24 hourB 1 crushing, making a total of 'SOOozs on hand from four days'run at this battery alone, and yesterday another parcel of 130ozs ; dime to hand at the same mill. At the, Tararu battery the stuff is showing up equally well, The company's'own mill has been engaged'on a trial crushing from the islide. It contains gold',, and. is worth sdwts to Gdwts to the ton, and will therefore pay when crushed iu large quantities, and when carriage is not so dear as it is at present. In poor stuff like this the cost of carriage makes a very serious item. Judging ' from', the magnificent show which the stuff has "made and is now making, the result of the present fortnight's 'crushing will be very' much greater than, any of those hitherto deposited from'this ; ievel.' .„.''" ' Colilak.—The manager arranged to commence crushing at some Ib'attery on the flat. There are about 40 tons ol quurtz available and a fausaniplo of picked stuff, so that the return in all will ho up, to the ; usual average.', Since the lasterushing'tho.'ma'nager has parried •on a considerable jmounfc ,of prospecting ' work/ 'sinking '' whzea''' and extending

drives, and this accounts for the length of timo which he has been taking out the stuff now on hand. Nonpareil.—There was again' a very rich show of gold on Thursday in the winze which is being sunk on the No. 1 reef, at the Italian side of the slide. About 501bs of specimens and picked stuff came toiband, and a good: show was left in the face. The lode has improved in size as well as quality, and the show of gold on Thursday was the richest that has ever been found since the lode was recovered at this side of the' slide.. Van guard. — Very good progress is being made with-the Vanguard: shaft. It is now down and a depth of 80 feet, and, is, in beautiful sinking country. A few quartz, veins, some of which are two or throe inches thiok, have been cut through: while sinking, thus showing that the shaft, is in quartz 'country. The" Whim' and 'pojipetheads, 'ivhich; have been purchased from the .Pifd-in-Mand Company, will be erected over the shaft next week.
