SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.

(Per Anglo-Australian Telegraph Press Agency.) Auckland, Thursday. The charge of incendiarism against Alexander Brown was commenced to-day in the Police Court. Mr Brookfield prosecuted; Mr Bees and Mr Joy for prisoner. The first witness called was Hadrill, reporter of the Eerald, who deposed to being early at the fire, when only a small number of persons were present. Brown told him he had seen a man strike a match, and set fire to the buildings, and on the following day asked him to advocate that a reward be paid to himself, Butterworth, and Doran for discovering and putting out the fire. There are such a number of witnesses in this case that it will probably last three days. After Hadrill's evidence, the examination of Inspector Broham occupied the remainder of the day. He deposed to the contradictory statements made by Brown, and said he believed the prisoner lived with his father, who is proprietor of the Custom House Hotel. The front of the hotel is in Fort-street. He went to the hotel, accompanied by Detectives Jeffrey and Ternahan, for the purpose of making a search. He was induced to take this step in consequence of a large bundle of rags and papers found at the Post-office, which were handed over to the police. The bundle contained half a Jewish Chronicle of date August 23rd, 1872, part of the Herald of May 260h, 1874, and parts of the k veiling Star of January 6th and 9th of the present year. There was a piece of lamp wick which had been used, and part of an envelope with the name of" Samuel Brown" upon it. There were also a piece of the lining of a woman's skirt, two pieces of calico, a slip of white paper, and some coloured rag, all saturated with kerosene. (The bundle was here produced containing the above.) He (Inspector Broham) searched' tho premises, and in a box of old papers (m the presence of Mr and Mrs Brown and others of the family) he found the corresponding portion of the Jewish Chronicle of the same date, the pages following consecutively. He also saw Detective Jeffrey find in the bath-room another portion of the same date (page 299) corresponding with page 299, found by the door of Must and Uo.'s premises. The Chronicle was addressed " Moss Brown, Esq., Shortland-street." He also found a lamp in the house (produced), and the wick found in the bundle fits the lamp exactly. He also found a small tin measure which had recently held kerosene in a small room by the kitchen (measure produce). He saw Detective Ternahan find the wrapper of a newspaper in an old box with an address to Brown in the same hand-writing, and sealed with wax in the same manner. He also saw Jeffreys find part of tho Herald of the 26th of May, fitting accurately with the part of the same paper found under the door, torn across the letter " H" iu " The." He also found the corresponding part of a skirt upstairs. There are eighteen witnesses yet to call. The case was adjourned.—Thome's case occupied the Bankruptcy Court the greater part of the day. The bankrupt's examination was continued. He admitted giving over a quantity of resin to Potter for the purpose of securing Cameron's claim upon him, and also to shipping, just prior to bankruptcy, 600 cases of kerosene to George Thome, gen., of Sydney, under the name of Kyan, Bell, and Co., with positive instructions to realise on the goods immediately. This was sold at a loss of £62. The case was further adjourned.—Henry Campbell, contractor, received his discharge. Liabilities, £243; assets, £12 15s. The alleged cause of bankruptcy was loss on a contract in the Queen of Beauty mine.

Sharemarket.—Sales: South British, 491; Old Whau, £4 7s 6d, £410s, £4 ss; Cure, lis 6d (before call); Queen of the Thames, 7s; Central Italy, 3s; Caledonian, £910s. Buyers: Inverness, 2s 6d; Queen of the May, lis 3d; Alburnia (new, issue), 40s; Moanataiari, 365; Golden Calf (double issue), 10s.
