MINING MATTERS.

Old Whau.- There was a still further improvement.in the face of the reef in themiin level last evening, so much so indeed that gold raiglifc beboked for at any moment, but there was very little visible during the course of the day. The junction has not yet been reached, but the dip of the run of gold was supposed to be close at hand. It was not, however, without reason that the nwket value of scrip rose so rapidly last night for a nnssage was sent down to the manager and directors by the boss of the shift, at 7 o'clock stating that gold had been struck in the low level. Although this was .a result which has ; ,all; -along.:' ? ; .beeh..' anticipated it took a great many by surprise. We can give no particulars as to the find at

present, as the message was merely to the effect that the gold was struck, but what the extent of the show was could hardly be judged until such time as the drive carried a little further ahead. The gold is in the hanging-.wall reef. At present the main reef is not opened up as far as the point where the run of gold strikes downwards near the junction; Ampbnia.-The final oleaniug up for the month took place yesterday, and produced in all 118jzs gold, in addition to the 2960zs previously lodged, thus making the total yield: 4l4>zs. ;:y es t er . day's cleauiug up included amalgam from both mills.: At the Ballaratand'Clunes machine, where the crushing has baen broken' and irregular, the return wag 53ozs of gold, which would have been

further increased by ataut loozs.if the blanket-washings, &c, were all treated. The average of the stuff crushed at.this mill so fir is about an ou-jcj to the ton. and there still remains aboit .60 tons of

the quartz' taken out from Dixon's main level to be crushed at this mill. Ihe re> mainder of the 118ozs was obtained at tlie company's own battery, whiei in addition to the 296)zs before referred to, gives the total of 36lozsof go'd as the result of 15 days crushing wHun average force of 16 hea I of stampers. Tue crushing at the company's own mill has of cours.j

been very much retarded by the frequent 1 stoppages which have been caused by want of water. The yisld for the quantity of stuff reduced is u very handsome one, but if the crushing had b.-en regular th/re would have been double the quality of stuff crushed, and in all probability the yield would bo twice as large as it now is. However, manager anJ shareholders have good, reason to be satisfied with the return, and with the general prospects of the, mine at present, 'MANUJUrjY— Ihere was a very 1 fine show of gold yesterday in the north face of the workings of the Manukau mine, and during the previous night a splendid parcel of golden stone, about 1 cwt, the greater, portion of which -was very rich, came to hand; The lode at this end is still very strong, and the richest stone is right in the centre of the reef. It still maintains its new strike, to /the W.N.K. very steadily,' the angle being very clearly defined, now that its course has been followed for some distance. In the south end' the reef is about 15 feet thick; containing a tine show of rioh losing mineral indications, including antimony, which now exists in the face, and although gold is not showing, there is Jittlo doubt regirding its existence. Antimony, although showing pretty freely in the, north face, is uow visible for the first time in this end of the reef. There still remains 15 feet to drive before the shaft [ ■. is communicated with, but as gold shows in i the stone in the shaft, .there is no. doubt that the same run continues for the full extent of the .mine so far as it is at present opeucd... The level is now properly timbered and rails laid through it, so that when the shaft is I reached and communication formod sloping can be at once commenced, : Waitlmata.—There was a nice looking leader 8 inoties wide opened yesterJay at the hang ng-wall side of the main reef in ihe Waiteimta mine, and a fair show of gold was fouud in it. The leader is a good strong quartz, and was discovered while working towards the Nonpareil from an old drive put in whilb Mr Stan- < ning was manager. i Lon» Dairß.—liatortiag for tUoLoag Drive tribute took ptaoe< yesterday, 'after i IS daysman, with six; head, of stampers, j during whiQh. abant 130 ton* ofstonft i ■ fe&l liM w<s (

75ozs of gold, which is only a moderate average. la fact it was only lately that the crushing oommenced to show up on the plates at all. The first portion of it wasso poor that the manager wa§ about to discontinue at the time the improvement became nbticable.

Tweepsidb Thibote. — There is a crushing at present going on at the Kuranui battery for the tributers of the Pweedside, Hape Creek, whioh gives promise of a good payable average, fhis mine is now being worked with much more vigour than it has been for some time past, and U likely to be developed into a property. There is a large strong reef upon which to work, and tho prospects aro so far very fair.
