POLICE COURT.— Yesterday.

Hobse-stbaling. — Heta, alias Peke Puru, on remand from Saturday, was charged with feloniously stealing a black horse, the property of Hoara Tareranui and another native, on or about the 29th instant.—Mr W. H. Grace interpreted.— Hoara Tareranui deposed that he resided at Ohiucmuri, and knew the prisoner since he was quite young, and Heta is his name. He never knew accused by the name of Peke Puru, the name attached to the receipt. Accused always resided at Ohinemuri. He visits the Puru sometimes, but did not reside there. The black horse outsido the Court belonged to witness and Paraku Tareranui. He used to keep the horse at Ohinemuri, and saw it there last on Sunday week, the 24th instant. Witness went on last Tuesday to look for the horse, but could not find it. He saw Heta in the evening of Tuesday at his mother's place. On Wednesday morning he heard that the saddle was missing. He missed Heta, and looked for him but could not find him. He next saw the horse outside the Court on Saturday evening. There were no brands on the horse, but he was oertain it belouged to himself and his brother, and he never gave Heta permission to take the horse away from Ohinemuri and sell him, He valued the horse at about £B.—Paraku Tareranui was also examined. He resided with the last witness, a relation of his. He recognised the horse outside the Court. It belonged to. last witness and himself. He also knew Heta. He never gave him permission to take the horse away from Ohinemuri and sell him.—John Connell was also exomiued. His evidence was similar to that given in the case heard on Saturday. He purchased the horse, with the saddle and bridle on it! Accused wanted £5 for it, but witness offered him £2 10s, which he accepted. Mr Mackie made out the receipt, which the accused signed with his nurk, giving his name as Peke Puru. Accused, alter receiving the money, told witness not to let the black horse get loose or lie would go back to where he was brought from.—-Detective Brennan was examined. He apprehended the accused on Friday, and charged him with stealing the bay horse, the subject of the case before the Court on Saturday last. He obtained possession of the horse outside the Court from last witness, also the receipt produced. — I his was all the evidence, which was then read over lo the accused.—Same defendant was brought up on remand, charged with stealing a bay horse, the prop >rty of Robert Kelly, storekeeper, Hikuiaia, on the 29th inst. The evidence, in this case was also read over to the Accused, who, after being cautioned in the usual manner, declined to say anything, and ho was then fully committed to take his trial at the next sittiug of the Supreme Court on both charges. Ijakckht.—*Heta, alias Peke Puru, was charged with stealing a saddie, the property of Tiuipoaka, on or about the 28th instant. To this he pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, with hard labour.
