THE COMMONWEALTH.

THE NEW TARIFF. 1 OPPOSITION IN ENGLAND. United Press Association — By Electric Telegraph. — Gooyright. LONDON, August 24. By a question asked in the House of Commons, Mr Harold Cox suggested that, as the new Australian tariff was likely to impede Australia's development, and thus impair her credit, it would be expedient to omit Australian stocks from the list of trustee securities. Mr Asquith replied that the Australian Commonwealth Parliament was still considering the tariff, and it was impossible to foresee its final shape. Ho added that the Lord High Chancellor was not empowered to exclude from the category of trustee securities any colonial stock which complied with the requirements of the Colonial Stock Act of 1900.
