TEACHERS' SALARIES.

» At Wednesday night's meeting of the Education Board (tho Wanganui Chronicle reports) Mr E. Dixon strongly urged that the Board should pay the exchange on teachers' salary cheques. He moved, "That in future the Board ,pay the exchange on nil teachers' I cheques, to take effect from October Ist ; that m the meantime the secretary cotaTnunioate with the Auckland and Otago , B.oards, asking for information as to (terms of the arrangement which those 'Boards havo made with their respective banks, and that the chairman and Mr Spardle be authorised to make a similar arrangement, and, if needful, to change tho Board's account to another bank." In speaking to the motion, Mr Dixon said he had been surprised, on looking into the matter, to find how many /poorly-paid teachers there were in the colony. Out of a total of 3800 teachers, ojnly 130 were receiving over £250 a year, and only 375 were receiving £200 land over. The cost to the Board would, Ihe thought, be not more than £4 a j month, and he contended that the Boa I'd was better able to pay it than tho teachers were. The chairman pointed out that it was the Government, and not the Board, that was to blame, as, prior to the Government taking over the payment of salaries, the Board had paid ( the exchange on teachers' cheques. After I a brief discussion it was decided to postpone further consideration of the matter until next meeting.
