Since tho last meeting of the Land Board some 1400 acres of' land, situated in different parts of the. district, but principally in Kaupokomii block, have been taken up, there being quite a rush for land at the present time.

A now departure has been made by the New South Wales Government in the appointment of a Board/ to receive and open tenders for public works, and to whose sittings the press nnd tenderers are admitted. The Australasian Ironmonger says that at the first meeting of the Board six clerks were engagsd opening the tenders, and with such expedition was the work conducted that in less than an hour's time tho Minister announced to about thirty tenderers the tenders that were aoceptod for various works. The Minister then announced that the deposits of the unsuccessful tenderers would be returned on application to the chief clerk. Mr A. C. Atkinson, a surveyor in the Government Department here, and son of the Premier, has received notice that his services will be dispensed with. It is Mr Atkinson's intention to go into the office of his brother, a lawyer in Nelson, in order to study for the profession of' the law. Mr C. Oliver, of. Mangorei, informs ns that the two Australian magpies sent to him by his brother, Mr S.
