Wellington, July 28.
, The Fine Arts Exhibition waa opened this afternoon by His Excellency the Governor. Among those present were theHons. Messrs. Whitaker, Rolleston, Dick, and Oliver, Sir W. Fitzherbert, the Mayor of Wellington, Archdeacons Stock and Thorpe, and Hon. Mr. Pharazyn, M.LO. Tha .Governor, in opening the Exhibition, expressed his pleasure in the movement, which was commendatory. Tire Exhibition, he said, displayed considerable amount of artistio talent in the province, which he hoped would ba the first of a number of this class of exhibitions to be held at the principal cenlres — Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland — as well as the smaller towns. In declaring the Exhibition to be open, he could only express his greatest desire that this Exhibition would be the pioneer to many such institutions, which would tend to develop the talent which he was sure existed among the artists of the Colony.
