WELLINGTON.

THE CITY ELECTION.

The Nomination for two members to serve in the Provincial Council, in consequence of Messis Hunter and Wakefield having accepted office under the late Acting Superintendent, took place in front of the Police Court on Thursday last ; as. previously announced, there was no opposition, Messis Moore and Tame proposed and seconded Mr Hunter ; Messrs Bowler and Kane did the same kindly office for Mr Wakefield. Both candidates, after having been declared duly elected, returned thanks, and the gathering dispersed. — Independent, 11th Sept. The steamer Queen, hence, arrived at Otago on the 27th ult., and being the first steamer which had ever anchored off Dunedin, the was welcomed with a salute of 20 guns, The Queen had sailed for the Bluff, and was to leave Otago for Melbourne via Lyttelton and Wellington on the 10th inst. — Ibid. The Rev. Arthur Baker, M. A., of Wellington, was charged by George William Schroder Esq., of Nelson, with having assaulted Mary Schroder, his daughter, on the Ist June, 1858. The Court, after upwards of an hours consideration of the evidence, returned a verdict of Guilty. The defendant was fined Five Pounds and Costs. — Spectator. As bearing on our commercial relations, both internal and external, we have to notice a most valuable addition in the shape of steam communication. There is an old adage very applicable "It never rains but it pours." Little more than twelve months ago, and we were without steam ; now we have the Wonga Wonga, the TasmanianMaid, and the White Swan, keeping up a continued and regular communication between the Provinces. The General Government and the Home Government have subsidised a line to connect, not only the Provinces with one another, but the Colony with Australia, the Termini being Sydney and Nelson. The mercantile community of Melbourne, alive to the importance of direct communication, have at present among us an able ambassador, the Honorable the Post-Master General of Victoria, for the purpose of arranging preliminaries for a line from Melbourne to Wellington, in conjunction with which it is proposed (we hear) to run the Queen to Canterbury and Otago. The Chamber of Commerce, with his Honor the Superintendent, and Dr. Evans, have been confabulating on this subject during the week, but we recommend them to act, not talk, as from the Nelson newspapers we observe the Chamber of Commerce there had called a meeting to consider the subject, doubtless with a view to divert the terminus on this side to what some persons call " a more central spot." Here we have Jive companies all established in little more than 12 months. Surely, Wellington must be a go-ahead place, and most undonbtedly it is so. If, as is supposed, the only use of the troops was to spend money, their loss will be more than compensated by the attraction to our shores of capitalists, many of whom will visit the Britain of the South when travelling is made easy by steam.— Wellington Independent, 28th August.
