The Canterbury Diocesan Synod has resolved tb&t a Dioeeson Temperance Society " be formed, on the basis of the Church of England Temperance Society, with the Bishop as president; and that it is desirable that, in connection with the -Diocesan Society, Parochial Societies should be formed, whereever practicable," the latter to be under the care of the resident clergyman.

A gltje factory has been started at Christ - church, under the charge of an English manager. The Good Templars' hall at Chrfsfcchurch is to be thirty-fiVe feet by sixty feet, and is to contain a large meeting room, reading, and committee rooms. Eight hundred shares have been taken in the venture. The Wesleyans of Ohristchurch have raised £738, by means of a bazaar, for their new school.

Explosion or Gas. —On October 23rd, Mr W. F. Warner of the Commercial Hotel, Cathedral Square, Christchurch, dotected an escape of gas in one of the rooms lately added to the old building, and on examination found that the plasterers had carelessly left the gaspipe open in the ceiling. He corked up the end of the pipe, and then struck a match to light his pipe when an explosion immediately took place. Both Mr Warner and his barman were thrown off the plasterer's scaffolding, which they had ascended to look for the leakage of gas, on to the floor, and were severely burnt, but especially Mr Warner.— Lyttelton Times. A gaswoeks plant for Lyttelton, Canterbury, has arrived from England. Mb. J. W. White, of Timaru, has been appointed a Crown Solicitor for the Canterbury judicial district.

The ship Duke of Edinburgh, from London, arrived at Lyttelton on November Ist, after a passage of 99 days. She brought 339 immigrants, all of trhom arrived in good health, classified as follows:— 46 married couples, and 116 children under twelve years of age; 65 single men, twenty of whom are agricultural laborers ; and 69 single girls, the greater portion of whom are country girls, used to farm work and milking. Testimonials were presented to the captain and doctor of the ship on arrival. There were five births and three deaths.

The barquentine C. L. Taylor arrived at Lyttelon October* 28th. She was built in the Brooklyn Na*y Yard for a gunboat, her original name being the Wainuna, in 1862. She was the first vessel that passed the ports at New Orleans when that place was taken, and lost twenty-seven men in the action, and when her planking was stripped off five tons of lead and iron were taken out. She is terribly lumbered up with timber. It the is finest cargo that has ever reached this port from America. It is all Oregon pine, and some of it is 16 x 16 and 105 feet long, and 18 xlB and 98 feet, exceptional lengths. She has had a rough passage, and looks much knooked about. Her captain reports that he left Burrard's Inlet, British Columbia, on the 21st September; sighted Aituoaki on the 27th, and on the Ist October crossed the 30th degree of South latitude, in longitude 173 west. From thence to port had Btrong W. and S.W gale?. Sighted first land off the East Cape on 18th October.—Canterbury Press, October 29th. The barque Elizabeth Graham, 114 days from G-avesend, arrived at Lyttelton on November 7th. She brought 15 passengers. The first attempt of extensively cultivating hops in the Province of Canterbury, is being made this year, by Mr. W. Wilson, of Christehureh. The Timaru (Canterbury) Agricultural show this year was a great succbbs. Two thousand five hundred persons visited the show, and the exhibits numbered four hundred and twenty-three.

The Canterbury Agricultural Show on [November 12tb, was very well attended. £600, in shillings, was taken at the gates.
