A FIRE RESISTING DRESS.
"The Melbourne Argus of October 27th states:—
An exhibition of fire-resisting dress took place in the JFriendly Societies' Gardens yesterday afternoon, when, according to announcements, M. Victor Becker, but* named "the Fire King," went through his performances in the interior of a blazing hut or shanty. The apparatus, which ia the invention of M Becker, is designed for the purpose of enabling firemen to pass into the interior of a burning house, for the purpose of saving life or valuable property, also for enabling firemen to occupy a position exposed to the flames when extinguishing a burning building. The dreas is composed of leather, over which pieces of sponge are thickly sewn with copper wire. When donned, it bears a considerable resemblance to the dress used by divers. A small hut composed of dry faggots on an iron frame, ! was erected in the gardens, which, when I thoroughly on fire gave out a very great heat. Into this M. Becker went and walked about amid the flames, but seldom stayed longer than a minute and a half. Only on .one occasion did he stay two minutes. He half cooked some chops, and brought out of the fire an iron vessel that had been allowed to / get very hot, but he constantly' came out , and seemed very glad to get a^ breath of cool' air, which he obtained by logening a •mall oblong square of glass placed ;on the front of the headpiece for the nurpbta of seeing . . -.. - 'ITS..?.- : . *."■
