The Times this morning announces that Mr Bowen, Resident Magigtrate at Christcburch, has been appointed a Minister of Justice, and denounces the appointment. Madame Goddard, in her farewell performance last night, met with amosL enthusiastic reception, the Btage being literally covered with boquets. The Scotch fantasia was encored, and at " God save the Queen" the audience rose and she was greeted •with cheers, cries of " bravo," " well played," &c. She leaves for Dunedin to-day. Wednesday. The Oneco is being ballasted preparatory to sailing for Nelson, where she will discharge the remainder of her cargo. The yeteran Corps have fired for the dlstriot representatives :-»-Crowe, 87; Bannister, 85 } and Scott, 83. With regaid to the performance of the Interprovincial mail service so as to obviate the necessity of the San Francisco boats coming down the coast, the Post states that the General Government decline to pay the £2,300 per annum asked by the New Zealand Steam Shipping Company, and intimate that they ■will pay no more than £120 per trip, making the arrangement from month to month. Young Gait, who at the last session of the 3upreme Court was sent to gaol for six months for illegally killing a calf, was discharged to-day. The pardoning of Gait was the last official act of the Governor before leaving Wellingfon. Mr Hawthorne, the Sector of the High School, is dangerously ill, and very slight hopes of his recovery are entertained. He has been suffering since the 9th instant fxfan inflammation of the lungs.' Twenty-four Volunteers qualified in the companies firing in tbe Auckland district for right to take part in firing for four representatives at the' Colonial prize firing. The chief scores were, Hay, Hazlett, and M'Douald, each 90; Kelly, 87 j Skinner, 82; I White. 82} Leigh, 80; Haresnape and Partington, each 79. At the Waiuku firing, Captain Hamlin, 91 ; Centric, 83. . .
