STARTING IN ENGLAND AND AUSTRALIA.

The bad starting noticeable on English racecourses has aroused the ire and the native enthusiasm of an Australian, who, writing; td the London " Sportsman " on the subject, signs himself "Fleming-ton." He considers that the starting in England isdis■graceful as compared with that which prevails at Flemington and Rand wick, and his letter has drawn a forcible response from another conespondent signing him&elf Auld Reekie, who affirms that the starting at Rand wick is beneath contempt, and that good starts even at Flemington are the exception. Ten or twelve years ago (writes "Asmodeous") "Flemington's" argument would have been sound enough, but I am afraid that in " Auld Reekie " we must allow that we have " a chiel" who has been "amang us takin' notes," and has pretty forcibly hit the nail on ,the head. There was undoubtedly a time when our prince of starters was "a bad 'un to beat," but of late it must unfortunately be allowed' even by the most enthusiastic Australian , that on the leading metropolitan racecourses in this colony efficient starting has ceased to be a feature of which we have any justifiable cause to be proud.
