ADVANCES TO SOLDIERS.
DEPARTMENTAL DECISION. Some discharged soldiers, who had negotiations for the purchase of homes or farms well advanced when the restrictions in respect of advances under section 2 of the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act came into effect on April 20, have had difficulty in meeting their obligations. The Lands Department has now decided to consider applications for assistance from these men. Sir H. D. SI. Haszard, Commissioner of Crown Lands for Canterbury, has been advised that, where bona fide engagements had been entered into by soldiers before April 26 —that is, where the papers' were signed before that date — the men may apply for Government assistance, and have their cases dealt with .by the Land Boards. Ever} - application will be dealt with on its merits, and assistance will be granted where it can be shown that hardship will result if the soldier has to finance the whole affair himself. A man who entered into negotiations to purchase after the restrictions came into force on April 20 will have no claim on the department.
