BRIDGING A BREACH. The dispute—now one of fairly long standing—between the New Zealand .Swimming Council and the New Zealand Exeetuive of the Royal .Life-Saying So-: ciety, bids 'fair now to .be ibrjouglit to a "termination mutually to the parties concerned. The action;: o£ the Government in providing that the Humane grant should be diverted from the New Zealand Council to the Life-Saving Executive has, in effect, terminated the cause for any further controversy on that basis, but there still remains a desire to clear up many of the matters not disposed of by the automatic effect "of an" arbitrary diversion which party can vary. Several letters that apparently made up in belligerent character, what they undoubtedly lacked in tact, passed between the two bodies. The council is described as having held up to the bull a red rag tthich the bull rushed, and the reciprocated animosity, which was quickly made manifest, opened to a width, almost beyond bridging, a breach which more-con-sidered initial action might have prevented. Whatever the merits of the dispute where, or wherever the balance of fault rests, the dispute was in every respect regrettable, and should certainly never have been permitted to arise between two bodies whose relations should, without difficulty, be maintained on a perfectly harmonious standing. The New Zealand Council has now set up a committee to confer with the Life-Saving Executive, to endeavour to finally clear the matter up.

OTHER MATTERS. "We are booming," says Mr G. S. Hill, chairman of the Wellington head centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society, in a letter to the writer. '' 1 sign certificates, two and three times a week. I signed about 20 to-day for school certificates, elementary, etc. That's the place for recruits. By the end of this month we expect to have about (500 working for awards. I was invited to St. Patrick's College last week, and presented several certificates. Wellington College boys are also working. We are a real live institution." The .Linwood Swimming Club held a 50yd race on Friday evening. The following was the result: —First heat: K. Spencer and K. Butters (dead heat) 1. C. Johnson and H. R. Matthews also started. Second heat: C. Orchard I, D. Coulter 2. H. J. Bowlker, T. Keighley, and L. Coulter also started. Final: C. Orchard 1, K. Butters 2. E. Spencer, D. Coulter, and 0. Johuson also started, llv C. Atkinson acted as starter. CRAWL
