The ITnited States authorities are recognising the value of improved roadTrays, and the coming of the motor has greatly stimulated action- in that direction. In'addition to purely local (State) roads, a transcontinental .highway-—the Lincoln Memorial —is :being constructed; and, where 10 years ago the expenditure on roads throughout the Republic was - £16,000,000, the sum. to be spent this year tvill be £41,000,000 —an increase of over 250 per cent. Notwithstanding the huge amounts expended, only 10 per cent, of the roads in; the Union jiavfc been' improved, their aggregates distance being 2,226,842 miles while t -those' already bettered total 223,774 -miles. The- United States Department of Agriculture, which supervises highway cbnstrttction through its Roads Burfeau, considers good roads a profitable invfestment, which, with motor tract-ion,'are showing bettei' results ever" year, because' the farmers find the market always readily'accessible to them,. and caii dispose of their crops when the prices .are
