FRUITGROWERS' ASSOCIATION.

The monthly meeting of the Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association was held on/Saturday evening, Mr "W". Raypresiding over a good attendance., Three new members were elected.. A resolution was carried to the effect that, members should pay Is per acre towards the upkeep of the Association, less the 2/6 already contributed. After some discussion on the question ;of Canterbury fruit exhibit for the. Panama Exposition, it was decided that there should be no exhibit, as the late frosts had destroyed most of the apple j crops. ! It was resolved to send a letter thank- ■ ing the Minister of Agriculture for : the guarantee of Id alb on pears and apples shipped for the Home market. It was decided to ask the Railway Department for an explanation of the sudden refusal to carry soft fruit, and at the earliest possible opportunity, as j the refusal would result in loss to growi ers. I Mr T. J. Burnet gave an address' on j the handling and marketing of apples: |in South America in connection with i the export trade from New Zealand. I Mr Burnet stated that the fruit was | badly handled. in landing at Monte [ Yideo and Rio de Janeiro. Apples which sold at 7s a case at Lyttelton realised j 5/4 a dozen in South America. He urged that they should establish a N6w Zealand representative in South America to handle the fruit.
