The far-flung battle line in Belgium, France, and Lorraine is spread over a front of 300 miles or more. Broad as it is, a million men could not be crowded into it shoulder to shoulder, for such a number in line would take up about 380 miles of ground. At a moderate estimate, 6,500,000 men may be engaged on. both sides in the battle from Belfort to the sea, a commentary on the depth of the reserves and the long time which must elapse before a decision can be obtained.
